A heat pump has two basic functions; to heat your house in the winter and cool you off in the dog days of summer. These systems consist of an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (evaporator). Refrigerant piping connects these units. During the summer months the indoor unit will remove the heat and humidity and transfer the unwanted heat to the outdoor unit where it gets released. During the winter months, believe it or not there is heat in the outdoor air. The outdoor unit takes this heat and transfers it into usable heat, which can then be delivered to the indoor unit into your home.
